TOM DWAN
POKER PLAYER:
Tom Dwan
NICKNAME:
Durrrr: his online name designed to induce tilt in opponents.
POKER STYLE:
Generally loose-aggressive but does play a high-variance game.
FELT ACCESSORIES:
Hats – lots of them! In 2008, Tom made a promise to some fellow poker friends that he would be on time to meet them, following accusations of poor time-keeping. To prove his intent, Tom vowed that if he was late they could spend the entire $25,000 WPT Championship picking out stupid hats for him to wear at the tables. Tom was late. The hats were stupid. Dwan sported everything from pink flamingoes to Carribean fruit baskets and ten pin bowling pins!
TABLE MANNERS:
Expect action-junkie behaviour and stella calls.
POKER BLING:
Having carved out his poker career online, Tom Durrrr Dwan has persisted in making waves in the world of pro poker. Most famous is the Durrrr Challenge. In 2009 Dwan’s high-profile loving, aggressive nature got heads turning when he offered a $1m heads-up challenge. The bet gave opponents 3-1 odds on $500k that they could beat Durrrr over 50,000 hands while four tabling. The winner stands to gain $1.5m. The bet continues with Patrick Antonius giving Durrrr a run for his money.
RUMOUR HAS IT:
In 2007, Dwan went on tour in Europe with his close pal Alan TheUsher Sass. As their game was online, they spent loads of money on luxury hotels and room service while spending their days raking it in on the PC. They did manage to see a bit of Europe before their return to the US with all expenses paid and a tidy profit to boot. They had allegedly set up an account where both players got 50% of the total winnings made on tour. Sass settled back to normal life but Dwan continued to play using the joint account. Rumour has it he turned the remaining $7k into $675k in 6 hours. Sass, who by now had forgotten their deal, was amazed to learn of his $335k profit for doing absolutely nothing! Now that’s a pretty good friend to have.
FAMOUS PROP BETS:
Never afraid of a prop bet, Dwan will splash out an easy $2k on a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors and take on professional chess players at the most unfavourable odds alike. Always up for a laugh, Dwan set up a ‘human bowling ball’ prop bet with fellow player Jeff Madsen. At the 2008 WSOP, Dwan bet Madsen he couldn’t bowl over the giant promotional beer cans in one body check. Defying security, the boys set up the inflatable cans in a skittles format and Madsen was allowed a run up from which to hurl himself into them. He proved he was a particularly effective human bowling ball and claimed his winnings off Durrrr, who promply left Madsen to deal with the irrate guard who was trying to shut down the action.
